After playing around and doing some trial and error based on the above info along with my mistakes, here's an easy guide that I hope you can understand.
-------------------------
(Gold or Orange is the same thing. They both refer to a lvl 5 version of the material.)
The Goal: EFFICIENTLY get the best Gold equipment for your deck
Stage 1:
Identify which equipment and the materials needed for the lvl 1 and lvl 3 equipment version
This is important because you will be spending a lot of time crafting the required materials. If you try to do everything at the same time, it will take forever.
My main deck is a recycler + heavy hitter or disposal depending on the opponent.
Since it is recycle heavy with my HB, I realize my main equipment should be focused on improving dodge ability.
That means, I need to go with the best crafted boots equipment.
Stage 2: Get any Purple lvl 1 equipment
Each equipment has 5 levels.
* lvl 1 equipment need 2 materials and 1 equipment to craft
* lvl 2 equipment need 3 materials and 1 equipment to craft
* lvl 3 equipment need 4 materials and 1 equipment to craft
* lvl 4 equipment need 4 materials and 1 equipment to craft
* lvl 5 equipment need 4 materials and 1 equipment to craft
The goal is to be efficient.
So stage 2 is to get a lvl 1 purple equipment by collecting the following:
Boots Example:
To craft a purple lvl 1 boot, I need one purple of gnarl or steel and a white version of the other.
Then I need to have any white equipment.
Add the 2 materials and 1 equipment to craft a purple lvl 1 boots.
Side note:
When you add the materials, you see a % number on the right side. Like this screenshot. screencast.com/t/RAD1kp7r1K
That tells you the probability of what color material you get. In the screenshot I didn't have any materials, but you can see that it's likely to be a white equipment.
Stage 3: Work on getting GOLD lvl 1 equipment
Following the same concept as stage 2, the next step is to work on getting a gold version of the lvl 1 equipment. Because you need at least one gold lvl 1 equipment to have a 100% probability of crafting a gold lvl 3 equipment.
You spent too much time to waste materials for a failed craft.
To understand stage 3, think about this backwards.
To craft a gold lvl 1 equipment, you can do it in the following ways
OR when you understand how this works better or get lucky and draw a gold material
Congratulations, you got a gold lvl 1 equipment.
Simple Boots Example:
Get enough white materials of gnarl and steel (about 64 of them) to upgrade them to purple grades.
Then make any white lvl 1 equipment.
Add the purple gnarl and purple steel and white lvl 1 equipment and craft to get lvl 1 gold boots.
Complex Boots Example:
Since I had lots of material that I never knew how to use, I had gold talon. After reading what brobelix said, I created a gold lvl 1 cloth tunic using gold talon and white jawbone.
But I'm after boots, and know that one gold equipment/material + white material/equipment = gold lvl 1 equipment.
So I went to craft boots and added the gold lvl 1 cloth tunic + white gnarl.
Bingo. I got a gold lvl 1 boots.
Stage 4: Work on getting GOLD lvl 3 equipment
Use all that you've mastered up to stage 4.
Again think backwards using the following info.
To craft lvl 3 gold equipment you need the following:
Total 5 items.
When you've built up enough materials and equipment, you can craft a gold lvl 3 equipment.
Notice the difference between the lv l3 gold and lvl 5 blue.
It was quicker to make the lvl 3 gold and I have better stats. Now imagine getting lvl 5 gold
That's what I'm working on.
Stage 5: Work on getting lvl 5 Gold
The sequence is to go from lvl 1 gold -> lvl 3 gold > lvl 5 gold.
Ignore lvl 2 and lvl 4 equipment. Not needed.
Unfortunately, there is no way to get 100% guarantee rate for lvl 5 gold..
You just need to get 4 gold materials and 1 gold equipment to have 42% chance of getting lvl 5 gold equipment.
Dismantling Techniques
This is the key.
You'll likely draw gold or purple materials that you don't want or are not trying to accumulate.
There is a technique to switch it from one item to another.
It's called dismantling.
If you click on any equipment, you get 3 options.
1. dismantle
2. equip/unequip
3. upgrade
In the boots case, to work on getting lvl 1 gold, I need gold gnarl or steel.
For a lvl 3 gold boots, I need one gold of any feather, gnarl, steel or extract.
But let's say I did lucky draw and got a gold sawtooth.
The technique to transform it to a gold gnarl or steel is to first:
1. craft a gold lvl 1 bronze belt by using one gold sawtooth + 1 white fur
2. craft a gold lvl 1 cloth boots by using the gold lvl 1 bronze belt from (1) and one white gnarl/steel
3. dismantle the gold lvl 1 cloth boots and you will get either a gold gnarl or gold steel
If you get the same gold material after dismantling, just re-craft it with another white item and then dismantle again to see if you get another gold material.
You can do this as many times as you want.

To understand stage 3, think about this backwards.
To craft a gold lvl 1 equipment, you can do it in the following ways
- two purple materials (purple gnarl and purple steel) + one purple lvl1 equipment (from stage1)
OR when you understand how this works better or get lucky and draw a gold material
- one gold material/equipment and one white material/equipment (combination doesn't matter here)
- (always check the right side % number and make sure it says 100% chance of getting the gold equipment)
Congratulations, you got a gold lvl 1 equipment.
Simple Boots Example:

Use all that you've mastered up to stage 4.

To craft lvl 3 gold equipment you need the following:

- one gold material
- two purple material
- one blue material
Total 5 items.
Not needed.
5x gold (4 materials + 1 lvl3 gold item) = highest possible chances to get lvl5 gold equip Around 42% chance
You just need to get 4 gold materials and 1 gold equipment to have 42% chance of getting lvl 5 gold equipment.

- Dismantling a lvl 1 gold item always gives 1 gold material 100%

- 4 materials (1 gold, 2 purple, 1 blue) + 1 lvl1 gold equipment = lvl3 gold equipment almost 100%
- 5x gold (4 materials + 1 lvl3 gold equipment) = highest possible chances to get lvl5 gold equip Around 42% chance
- 4x rare gold + 1 lvl5 gold item + 250 sparks = highest possible chances to get a rar lvl5 gold... with bonus skill. I dont know % for gold on this one
